Miniature Quilts
TULIP GARDEN – 2011
The tulip blocks were foundation paper pieced using my reverse paper piecing technique. The 6" center square was made using a block from Paula Nadelstern’s Puzzle Quilts book. This was my Susan G. Komen Pink Challenge miniature silent auction quilt for 2011. It received a Second Place and a Member’s Choice award at the local quilt show.
CABIN FEVER – 2011
Only 2 fabrics were used in this quilt, a striped and a novelty fabric. The 6" center square was made using a block from Paula Nadelstern’s Puzzle Quilts book. The nine patch border was made with strips cut from the striped fabric. This was my Susan G. Komen miniature silent auction quilt for 2011. It received a Third Place award at the local quilt show.
WINTER’S STAR – 2010
This quilt block was made at a Marsha McCloskey workshop in 2009. After finishing the quilt top I decided to replace the four plain corner squares with star blocks so did some unsewing. This was my Susan G. Komen Pink Challenge miniature silent auction quilt for 2010. It received a Member’s Choice award at the local quilt show.
STATE FLOWER MEDLEY – 2010
The blocks for this quilt were made from the cut-off triangles of a state birds and flowers quilt that I started in 2004 and is still in progress. The center of this quilt was already pieced and it just needed borders, so I decided to finish it for my Susan G. Komen miniature silent auction quilt for 2010. It received First Place and Judge’s Choice awards at the local quilt show.
MINI KALEIDOSCOPE – 2009
After watching a demo of Ricky Tims’ Kool Kaleidoscope on The Quilt Show, I decided to use the technique to make a miniature quilt using striped fabrics instead of piecing fabric strips. The challenge was finding enough fabrics that would work together and stripes that were wide enough for matching. I had a little trouble getting the center to come together with the narrow stripes, the widest being only 1/4", so I appliqued a star in the center.
MINI KALEIDOSCOPE PILLOW – 2009
This is the same quilt as above that I turned into a pillow. I photographed it as a wall hanging first so the quilting designs I chose would show better in the picture. It received a First Place award in the Other Quilted Items category at the local quilt show. It is also featured in Ricky Tims’ Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts book.
GARDEN WINDOWS – 2009
The four-patch blocks for this quilt were made by layering four repeats of a floral fabric, cutting squares, then sewing four identical pieces together. I wasn’t happy with my first attempt at making this quilt because it didn’t read miniature, so I cut the four-patch blocks out of the quilt, made them smaller and added the light pink and striped fabrics to turn them on point. This was my Susan G. Komen Pink Challenge miniature silent auction quilt for 2009. It received a Member’s Choice award at the local quilt show.
PINEAPPLE DELIGHT – 2009
This quilt was inspired by my Pineapple Split pattern. The border templates for this pattern also include a smaller template that can be paper pieced in the traditional way. I paper pieced four quarter pineapple blocks for the quilt center, then added sashing and cornerstones. This was my Susan G. Komen miniature silent auction quilt for 2009. It received an Honorable Mention award at the local quilt show.
PINK SUNSHINE & SHADOW – 2008
I needed a quick pattern for my Susan G. Komen Pink Challenge miniature silent auction quilt for 2008 that I decided to make at the last minute. So I used my Sunshine & Shadow pattern and reduced the squares from 2" finished to 3/8" finished. This quilt was made while waiting for the results of a biopsy that changed my plans for the rest of the year. This is a photo of the quilt top only. I haven’t been able to locate the photo that was taken of the finished quilt. It received a Member’s Choice award at the local quilt show.
BITS AND PIECES – 2008
The cut-off triangles from a black and white sampler quilt were used for the blocks for this quilt. This is a photo of the quilt top only. I haven’t been able to locate the photo that was taken of the finished quilt. It was finished with a pieced binding using scraps of the black and dark gray fabrics. This was my Susan G. Komen miniature silent auction quilt for 2008. It received an Honorable Mention award at the local quilt show.
RIBBONS OF HOPE – 2007
I spent at least 2 years working on the design for this quilt before deciding it was time to make it. The ribbon blocks were pieced using my reverse paper piecing technique and finished at 2-1/4". The inner ribbon border blocks were made from strip-pieced triangles. The quilt finished at 15" square. This was my Susan G. Komen Pink Challenge miniature silent auction quilt for 2007. It received a First Place award at the local quilt show. Free Pattern with traditional paper piecing templates available.
GEESE AMONG THE STARS – 2007
After making my Geese Among the Stars lap size quilt, I had enough fabric left to make blocks for 2 miniature quilts. This quilt has beads hand sewn in the center of the stars and around the border that don’t show up in the photo. It was my Susan G. Komen miniature silent auction quilt for 2007. It received a Member’s Choice award at the local quilt show. My sister-in-law won this quilt and when my brother-in-law called to congratulate me, he asked me how he was supposed to cover up with an 18" square!
