Pieced Quilts
MOSAIC WONDER – 2011
Quilted by Sabina Thompson.
This king size quilt was inspired by Susan H. Garman’s “STARS FOR A NEW DAY”, a block of the month at thequiltshow.com in 2009. I redesigned every round for a completely different look. It received a First Place award in the Master Division, 2 person category, at the local quilt show.
GAVIN’S DIAMONDS – 2009
This quilt was made for one of my grandsons. It uses a quilt-as-you-go technique that I developed a few years ago for making donation quilts.
JILLIAN’S POLK-A-DOTS – 2009
Quilted by Sabina Thompson.
I found the fabric for this quilt while on a trip and thought it was a perfect match for my youngest granddaughter’s room. I just happened to have some graph paper with me and sketched the design in the motel room, figured yardage, and went back the next day to get more fabric. I used a modified version of the piecing technique from my pattern, Pineapple Split, to piece the pineapple blocks which start as rectangles and end as squares.
TRI-EDGE SAMPLER – 2007
Quilted by Donna Akins.
This was my first attempt at making a quilt using equilateral triangles. I developed several strip-piecing techniques for piecing the blocks which require the use of a special ruler. I found a ruler that will work for the size blocks used in this quilt and will share the techniques in future tutorials. There are 6 different block designs in the quilt that were repeated twice.
DOUBLE PINWHEELS – 2007
Quilted by Donna Akins.
This quilt was started in 2003 and was designed to go with the wallpaper in my grandchildren’s playroom. Before I had time to finish it, I had switched rooms and changed the wallpaper to something completely different so it no longer matched. I used a strip-piecing technique that resulted in the 2 different blocks plus bonus blocks for the pieced border. It received a Third Place award in the Master Division, 2 person category, at the local quilt show.
KALEIDOSCOPE – 2006
Quilted by Donna Akins.
Only 4 fabrics were needed to make this quilt: a multi-colored batik, and a light, medium, and dark fabric. There are only 2 block designs but there are lots of triangles in this quilt. I used quick-piecing and squaring-up techniques which didn’t require accurate piecing of all of those triangles.
FANCY FEATHERED STAR – 2005
Quilted by Donna Akins.
When Marsha McCloskey visited our quilt guild in 2004, I purchased her book, Feathered Star Quilt Blocks I. There was one pattern in the book - Kay’s Star, designed by Kay Bruce of Kerrville, Texas - that didn’t require any partial or set-in seams. This is the third quilt that I made based on that pattern and using my own piecing techniques that are in my Fancy Feathered Star pattern.
RAINBOW OF LOVE – 2003
This was a donation quilt for the Quilt of Dreams. I made it at the same time I was making my daughter’s wedding quilt. The bride, picket fence border, and wedding ring corners were added to the quilt design after reading Briana dreamed for rainbows and getting married. Interlinking rings are embroidered in the center of the wedding ring blocks and the bride holds a yo-yo flower. This was my first quilt contest entry and it received a First Place award in the District for Best Use of Theme.
ROSEBUD DANCE – 2006
Quilted by Donna Akins.
The technique I used to make the blocks for this quilt resulted in right and left hand blocks. Half of the blocks were used for the quilt center and the other half for the pieced border. The blocks finish at 9" and could also be paper pieced.
